What You’ll Learn From This Class

Master Simplified Florals & Brush Techniques – You’ll learn how to break down real flowers into easy shapes, then bring them to life with paint & mixed media through layering, blending, and playful mark-making.

Understand color & contrast – You’ll discover how to build dynamic color palettes and use hue-based shading to create vibrant depth and visual interest in your work.

Create balanced, natural compositions – You’ll gain the skills to arrange both real and imagined flowers into engaging, well-composed floral arrangements.

Turn your florals into repeat patterns – You’ll learn how to digitize your artwork and create seamless repeat patterns for prints, fabric, and other products.

  • You don’t need to master botanical realism to create beautiful floral art. In fact, this class is all about letting go of perfection and embracing the joy of imaginative mark-making. We’ll focus on expressive brushstrokes, playful shapes, and stylization that captures the feeling of a flower, not every petal in scientific detail. Through guided lessons and creative prompts, you’ll learn how to loosen up, trust your instincts, and develop a floral style that feels personal, approachable, and full of life.

  • This class will teach you how to arrange your flowers with intention and creativity using simple but powerful composition techniques. We’ll explore different layout styles to help guide the eye and create visual flow in your work. These easy-to-understand approaches will help you transform your florals from a collection of individual blooms into a harmonious, well-composed piece that feels cohesive and complete.

  • You’re not alone—many artists feel uncertain about how (or if) different materials can work together. This class is your open invitation to play and experiment. We’ll explore illustrating florals in a variety of ways, using different tools and techniques—layering colored pencil with gouache, adding pastel pops, and letting brushstrokes shine. By the end, you’ll see that there’s no single “right” way—just millions of exciting possibilities. Whether you’re after bold and painterly or soft and delicate, you’ll learn how to make any medium work for your own floral style.

  • Maybe you’ve filled pages with beautiful blooms—but now you’re wondering, what’s next?

In this class, you’ll discover the Bonus Workshop so your floral art can go beyond the sketchbook. We’ll explore how to transform your hand-painted designs into seamless repeat patterns, perfect for printing on fabric, stationery, or other products.

Kind Words

  • Hi Elaine, I've started watching your new flower tutorials and can't wait to put pencils and paints to paper! It is so apparent that you put a ton of work into this series and I am happily grateful to be able to learn from you! Your explanations and examples are so clear and easy to grasp and I can't wait to get the next classes you have coming soon! I think I got one of the last little sketchboods before it sold out and it arrived in the mail today -so glad to add it to the others. Take care and may your days be filled with lots of time to create your special art.

  • I just purchased - already the first lesson I am in love. I just really appreciate how you break down the flower even into the anatomical subparts. I also love how you use the colored pencil and not paint up front so while we will need to be more precise with our mark making, the feeling is still whimsical and loose. (I just like how you do most of your lessons without a super sharp pencil tip!)

  • I just wanted to show you my creations from your class! I’ve been painting for years, but I’ve never actually taken a class focused on painting from photographs or real life—until now. Your class has really helped me break down flowers in a way that makes sense and has guided me toward finding how I want to create expressive marks. In the past, my patterns usually came from tracing photos or using stamps in Procreate, so it feels incredibly good to create something that’s entirely my own. Thank you for giving me the tools and confidence to do that.

  • Elaine! Really loving your class! I love that it helps us see the shapes and patterns of flowers so we could also draw more flowers that aren’t in your class 💕
