Let’s Talk Gouache!

Discover the joy of gouache painting in this exciting workshop. Gouache is one of my favorite mediums because it's so vibrant and easy to work with, especially if you're just starting out. In our first lesson, we'll get comfortable with the basics: understanding your paints, learning to layer and blend, and mastering that beautiful matte finish gouache is known for.

Then in lesson two, we'll create a plant still life together, step by step. I'll guide you through sketching, painting, and adding those final touches that bring your piece to life. Whether this is your first time picking up a brush or you're adding a new medium to your creative toolbox, you're going to love this!

  • This is a beginner workshop focuses on gouache painting, not drawing. We’ll be exploring how to use and understand gouache: layering, blending, and color mixing. If you’re completely new to drawing, a few parts might feel challenging, but with patience and curiosity, you can absolutely follow along.

  • Gouache colors: Primary Blue, Spectrum Red, Primary Yellow, White, Burnt Umber.
    Plus brushes, paper, and a palette, full list in the FAQ.

  • We currently offer auto-generated subtitles in English, Spanish, and French. While these may include minor grammar hiccups, they’re meant to help support your learning experience.

  • Paints (Winsor & Newton or any available brand):

    • Primary Blue

    • Spectrum Red

    Paper:

    • Sketchbook or pad hot pressed watercolor paper (cotton preferred but not required)

    Brushes (Princeton, Royal & Langnickel or any brand):

    • Detail brush (20/0) 

    • Round brush (size 5)

    • Flat brush (size 8)

    • Flat brush (½ inch)

    Drawing Tool:

    • Watercolor pencil (I used Faber Castell Albrecht Durer in Cinnamon) — great for underdrawings that blend softly when painted over

    Other Supplies:

    • Paint palette or plate

    • Cup of water

    • Paper towel

    • Spray bottle (optional - to reactivate your paint)

    • Blow dryer (optional - to dry your piece faster)

  • This class is designed for beginners to gouache paint but not for complete beginners in drawing. If you’d like to strengthen your drawing and mark-making skills alongside this workshop, I recommend taking my beginner class, Simple Joy of Drawing, in addition to this workshop.

  • My classes are designed for adults, but I’ve seen children ages 7–12 achieve wonderful results with guidance from a parent. Since I can’t assess your child’s individual learning ability, you know best whether this class would be a good fit. If you decide to enroll your child, I recommend taking the class together so you can guide and support them along the way.

  • Our upgraded video player (which includes subtitles and advanced features) may not work in some parts of Asia.
    But no worries—our basic video player, which is built into our website, is accessible worldwide. Please note that this version does not include subtitles.

  • Absolutely! Watch the lessons as quickly or as slowly as you like and complete the assignments according to your own schedule.

  • Yes! The class is available on your account as long as the internet continues to exist. Unlimited lifetime access.

  • The duration of each lesson varies, ranging from 30-55 minutes. Certain sections are sped up to ensure a smooth flow for the class. Each lesson includes teaching content and assignment for the student.

  • My art classes feature over 6 pre-recorded art lessons available for a single, affordable payment, making it accessible for everyone to join.

  • There is no end date for this class. They are pre-recorded lessons that will always be available. However the special live Q&A Zoom session is only be available for students who sign up during the launch month. It will be recorded for the rest of the students.

  • Although this class is geared toward and teaches with traditional mediums. 

    You can use a gouache paint brush (Adobe has those sets) and a colored pencil like brush (like the Shale brush on procreate) to mimic the outcome of the art lessons.

    I think it depends on how well you can adapt these lesson into your preferred medium - but the concepts are definitely transferrable.
