Let’s Play with Pastels!

Welcome to this workshop on watercolor pastels, featuring Caran d’Ache Neocolor II aquarelle pastels. In two short but packed lessons, you’ll learn the essentials: how to apply, blend, and activate colors with water, as well as layering, mixing, and creating textures.

Then, we’ll put these techniques into practice by creating a playful picnic spread with charming details. Whether you’re new to watercolor pastels or simply curious to try a new medium, this workshop will give you the skills and confidence to start creating in your sketchbook!

  • This is a beginner workshop focuses using watercolor pastels. However if you are a complete beginner to drawing, I recommend taking my beginner drawing class, Simple Joy of Drawing, alongside of this pastel class.

    • Watercolor pastels: Assorted colors of Caran d’Ache Neocolor II Aquarelle Pastels (Specific colors used are listed in FAQ.)
      You’re also welcome to use any beginner-friendly or economical watercolor crayon or watercolor pastel you can find. It does not have to be brand-specific. (budget friendly option suggested in FAQ.)

    • Other Supplies: Paper, Water, Paintbrush

  • We currently offer auto-generated subtitles in English, Spanish, French, German, and Portuguese. While these may include minor grammar hiccups, they’re meant to help support your learning experience.

  • You’ll get two lessons in this workshop, totaling almost one hour of pastel tips, demos, and creative fun. Perfect for a cozy afternoon session or a few short creative breaks throughout the week.

  • This workshop is fully pre-recorded, so you can watch it anytime and anywhere that fits your schedule. Each lesson is around 30 mins and you’ll have lifetime access to revisit it whenever you want.

FAQ

  • The supplies listed here are recommendations to help you follow along; they’re not mandatory. We’ll be using Neocolor II watercolor pastels in a variety of colors (listed for each lesson).

    Here’s a simple list of the pastels we’ll use:

    • 661 Cobalt Blue 5%

    • 249 Dark Olive

    • 245 Light Olive

    • 033 Golden Ochre

    • 521 Sahara Yellow

    • 042 Desert Rose

    • 051 Salmon

    • 071 Salmon Pink

    • 065 Russet

    • 403 Beige

    • 080 Carmine

    While I encourage students to purchase colors individually to suit their needs, you can also use the 40-color set (set via official site or set via Amazon) which contains most of these colors. You may need to purchase a few additional colors separately if they aren’t included in the set.

    You’re also welcome to use any beginner-friendly or economical watercolor crayon or watercolor pastel you can find. It does not have to be brand-specific. One more budget-friendly option some students like is Mungyo crayons or pastels, but please do your own research and choose what’s most available to you locally.

  • This class is not designed for complete beginners in drawing. It is intended for those who are new to Neocolor II pastels. If you’d like to strengthen your drawing and mark-making skills alongside this workshop, I recommend taking my beginner class, Simple Joy of Drawing, in addition to this pastel class.

  • My classes are designed for adults, but I’ve seen children ages 7–12 achieve wonderful results with guidance from a parent. Since I can’t assess your child’s individual learning ability, you know best whether this class would be a good fit. If you decide to enroll your child, I recommend taking the class together so you can guide and support them along the way.

  • Yes! We currently offer auto-generated subtitles in English, Spanish, French, German, and Portuguese.   • Our upgraded video player (which includes subtitles and advanced features) may not work in some parts of Asia.
    But no worries—our basic video player, which is built into our website, is accessible worldwide. Please note that this version does not include subtitles.

  • Absolutely! Watch the lessons as quickly or as slowly as you like and complete the assignments according to your own schedule.

  • Yes! The class is available on your account as long as the internet continues to exist. Unlimited lifetime access.

  • The duration of each lesson varies, ranging from 30-55 minutes. Certain sections are sped up to ensure a smooth flow for the class. Each lesson includes teaching content and assignment for the student.

  • My art classes feature over 6 pre-recorded art lessons available for a single, affordable payment, making it accessible for everyone to join.

  • There is no end date for this class. They are pre-recorded lessons that will always be available. However the special live Q&A Zoom session is only be available for students who sign up during the launch month. It will be recorded for the rest of the students.

  • Although this class is geared toward and teaches with traditional mediums. 

    You can use a gouache paint brush (Adobe has those sets) and a colored pencil like brush (like the Shale brush on procreate) to mimic the outcome of the art lessons.

    I think it depends on how well you can adapt these lesson into your preferred medium - but the concepts are definitely transferrable.
